Living Desert Botswana Great Wing SafariBotswana is known as “Old Africa’s Last Refuge”… a never-never land where the beasts roam free as they have done for millennia. The landlocked nation is blessedly underdeveloped, thanks to the severe Kalahari desert that blankets half the country under wind-blown sands. With a small human population (including some of the last remaining Bushmen), Botswana is truly a ‘wild’ safari destination.

Unwind and refresh in Johannesburg before winging to the small frontier town of Maun. Excitement starts immediately as your bush pilot maneuvers the light aircraft over the vast Botswana wilderness at an altitude that allows for aerial game viewing.

Living Desert Botswana Great Wing Safari mapTwo nights will be spent at each of three distinctly different Botswana camps that are unique in design and personality (most are tented) and are located in specific ecological enclaves that offer a smorgasbord of activities. “Water” camps specialize in wildlife activities aboard boats and mekoros (canoes). The fauna focus is birdlife, hippo, crocodiles and other wetland species. Often on the menu are exciting walking safaris. The “land” camps are seriously into the pursuit of the big land mammals. Open 4×4 vehicles allow you to get so close to the wildlife that you can leave your zoom lenses behind!

Whether you are a first-timer or a seasoned safari aficionado, Botswana’s spectacular wildlife legacy never fails to set the heart pumping and the cameras clicking.

If you have more time to explore, consider adding a Victoria Falls stopover or a visit to Cape Town.

Tuesday, October 23 Johannesburg – Maun, Botswana – Moremi Reserve

Your first glimpse of Botswana’s bush is from a bird’s eye view; a delightful introduction to the flora and fauna that has earned Botswana the reputation of ‘African’s Last Wildlife Refuge’.  You will arrive in time for lunch, before you start your afternoon activities.

An elegant, elevated thatch and timber structure serves as the main building comprising a main sitting area, wildlife reference library, dining room and cocktail bar inviting a true sense of the African wilderness. Other facilities include a secluded swimming pool with sundeck and thatched boma where brunch and high tea are served.

Accommodating just 22 guests in African-style safari tents, each individually sited on a raised teak platform with private adjacent facilities and viewing deck, the camp offers unsurpassed views of the lovely Xakanaxa Lagoon. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Wednesday, October 24 Moremi Game Reserve

You will enjoy a total of two nights at Camp Moremi. Game drives in open 4×4 vehicles, both in the morning and late afternoons, offer frequent sightings of lion, leopard and cheetah as well as wild dog. Alternatively, guests can explore the Xaxanaka Lagoon and surrounding Okavango channels by motorboat.

Moremi covers some 4,871 km2, as the eastern section of the Okavango Delta. Moremi is mostly described as one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa as it combines mopane woodland and acacia forests, floodplains and lagoons.  It is the great diversity of plant and animal life that makes Moremi so well known. The reserve contains within its boundaries approximately twenty percent of the Okavango Delta.

There are a wide range of habitats in Moremi from riparian woodland, floodplain, reed beds, and permanent wetland through mopane forest to dry savanna woodland. The mainland part forms only about thirty percent of the reserve and is, in many ways atypical, the remaining area being part of the Okavango Delta.

Birdlife is prolific and varied, ranging from water birds to shy forest dwellers. There are many species of ducks and geese, as well as an amazing variety of heron. Elephants are numerous, particularly during the dry season, as well as a range of other wildlife species from buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyena, jackal and the full range of antelope, large and small, including the red lechwe. Wild dog, whose numbers are so rapidly dwindling elsewhere, are regularly sighted in the Moremi and have been subject to a project being run in the area since 1989.

ACCOMMODATIONS: CAMP MOREMI (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Friday, October 26 Okavango Delta

At Camp Okavango there will be two scheduled activities per day – one commencing in the early morning and the second event starting just before sunset. The midday period is typically leisure time, when guests have the option to rest in their rooms, lounge poolside or enjoy the camp facilities.

Aside from the canoe and boat rides, make sure you take advantage of a walking safari, when you set out from camp into grassland savannah dotted with acacia trees. Stay alert and you soon become attuned to details such as the sounds of hidden animals. There is nothing quite like being able to touch, hear, smell and even taste nature all around. The scents of wild herbs are intoxicating: sage, basil and purple pod weed.

You might spot waterbuck, buffalo, elephants and hippos, and even get the adrenaline rush of sighting the occasional lion. But don’t be scared. As they say at the camp “If you don’t bother them, they won’t bother you”. Bird-spotting is superb: be sure to bring along binoculars.

Upon arrival at your final safari lodge, you will be warmly greeted by the camp staff and escorted to your accommodation. Lunch is served shortly thereafter, and you will have some leisure time to enjoy the camp facilities or espy game from the comfort of your veranda. Later in the afternoon guests will congregate for refreshments as the guides prepare for the afternoon / evening game activity

Return to camp just after sundown, when the nocturnal species emerge and the big cats start the nighttime prowl. Enjoy a delicious dinner and the camaraderie of other travelers, as game rangers regale guests with stories and tales of the African bush.
